In this Dify review for 2026, we examine Dify pricing, its free plan, AI agents, RAG and knowledge bases, visual workflows, self-hosting and how it compares with n8n.

Quick answer: Dify is one of the more complete platforms for building AI-native applications without assembling the model, retrieval, workflow and deployment layers from scratch. It is best suited to developers, technical founders, AI agencies and teams building agents or knowledge-grounded applications rather than people who only need a general AI chatbot.

Dify combines agentic workflows, model management, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tools, plugins and deployment in one environment. That breadth is its main advantage, but it also means Dify has a steeper learning curve than a simple no-code assistant.

Dify review 2026: quick verdict

Dify is most useful when the product itself is AI-driven. It is a strong fit for agents, document-grounded assistants, RAG applications and visual AI workflows. If the main task is broader app-to-app business automation, n8n may be the more natural starting point.

  • Best for: AI agents, RAG apps, internal knowledge assistants and AI-first workflows.
  • Free option: yes, through the Sandbox cloud tier and self-hosted Community edition.
  • Self-hosting: yes.
  • Main trade-off: more technical concepts and operational responsibility than a simple hosted AI assistant.

What is Dify?

Dify is an AI application development platform available as a managed cloud service and through self-hosted deployment. Its visual environment connects language models, knowledge sources, tools, plugins and application logic, then lets builders expose the result as an AI application or API.

The key distinction is that Dify is designed around applications rather than isolated prompts. A workflow can retrieve information, call a model, branch on a result, invoke tools and return structured output. Dify also supports conversational Chatflows and agent-based applications.

For teams working with proprietary information, its knowledge layer is especially relevant because reusable knowledge bases can ground responses in selected business or project data.

What can you build with Dify?

AI agents

Dify can build agents that combine model reasoning with tools and external information. This is useful when a task needs multiple steps rather than one model response, such as research, information retrieval or actions involving external systems.

Visual AI workflows

Dify's visual workflow environment can combine model calls, knowledge retrieval, tools, code, conditions and other nodes. Current Dify Cloud plans also support workflow triggers, including plugin, schedule and webhook-based events, although quotas and execution priority vary by plan.

RAG and knowledge bases

Dify includes a knowledge layer for retrieval-augmented generation. Teams can import documents and other data sources, configure retrieval and connect reusable knowledge to applications. This makes Dify for RAG one of the platform's clearest use cases.

AI apps and APIs

Applications built in Dify can be deployed as web experiences and APIs. That makes it possible to prototype an internal assistant and later connect the same workflow to another product or service.

Dify pricing in 2026

Dify currently offers a free Sandbox cloud tier, Professional and Team cloud plans, plus Community and Enterprise deployment options. Pricing and quotas can change, so this section reflects Dify's official pricing information checked on September 19, 2026.

  • Sandbox: free, with 200 message credits, one team member, five apps and up to 50 knowledge documents.
  • Professional: $590 per workspace per year on annual billing, including 5,000 message credits per month, three team members, 50 apps, 500 knowledge documents and 5 GB of knowledge storage.
  • Team: $1,590 per workspace per year on annual billing, including 10,000 message credits per month, up to 50 team members, 200 apps, 1,000 knowledge documents and 20 GB of knowledge storage.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing and deployment requirements.

Dify advertises annual billing as a 17% saving. Model costs also deserve attention: Dify's included message credits let users try supported models, while users can switch to their own API keys after credits are consumed. Self-hosting therefore does not automatically mean a zero-cost AI stack.

Is Dify free?

Yes. The Sandbox plan provides a practical way to explore Dify Cloud, while the Community edition can be self-hosted. The important distinction is that free software and free infrastructure are not the same thing: servers, storage and third-party model/API usage can still create costs.

Dify self-hosting: what you actually need to know

Self-hosting is a major reason technical teams consider Dify. It provides more control over deployment and infrastructure, but transfers operational responsibilities such as updates, backups, uptime, access control and security to the operator.

There is also an important licensing nuance. Dify's repository uses the Dify Open Source License, a modified Apache 2.0 license with additional conditions. The current license permits commercial use in many scenarios but restricts operating the source code as a multi-tenant service without written authorization and places conditions on removing Dify branding from its frontend. Teams building commercial SaaS products should review the current license rather than assuming standard Apache 2.0 terms apply.

Dify's biggest strengths

One environment for the AI application stack. Models, workflows, tools, RAG and deployment live in the same ecosystem, reducing integration work for small technical teams.

Model flexibility. Dify supports multiple model providers rather than forcing every application onto one AI provider. That matters when model quality, price or capabilities change.

Visual control. The workflow canvas makes multi-step logic easier to inspect than a collection of disconnected prompts and scripts.

Self-hosting. The Community route gives technically capable teams more infrastructure control, provided they are willing to operate it.

Strong RAG focus. Knowledge retrieval is a core platform capability, making Dify a sensible candidate for internal knowledge assistants and document-grounded applications.

Dify limitations and disadvantages

Dify is more approachable than building an AI application entirely in code, but it is not effortless. Concepts such as model providers, API keys, retrieval, embeddings, workflow logic and deployment still matter.

It is therefore less suitable for someone who simply wants an AI assistant for everyday writing. A mainstream AI assistant is faster for that job.

Dify can also be excessive for simple app-to-app automation. If the goal is mainly moving data between SaaS tools using straightforward rules, a dedicated automation platform may be easier. For that use case, see our n8n review or Activepieces review.

Finally, self-hosting shifts responsibility to you. Updates, security, uptime and infrastructure require ongoing attention.

Dify vs n8n: which is better?

Dify and n8n overlap, but their centers of gravity are different.

  • Choose Dify when the application revolves around LLMs, agents, RAG, knowledge bases and AI-specific workflows.
  • Choose n8n when the main requirement is connecting many business applications, APIs and operational processes, with AI as one component.
  • Use both when Dify should own the AI application layer while n8n handles broader business automation around it.

If you want to build a document-grounded AI assistant, Dify is usually the more natural starting point. If you want a workflow moving information through many business systems, n8n may fit better.

Dify vs Flowise and Activepieces

Flowise historically occupied a similar visual AI-building category, but its original project reached end of life in 2026. Anyone migrating should read our Flowise shutdown and alternatives guide.

Activepieces is a better comparison when the priority is general workflow automation, integrations and human approval steps. Dify remains the stronger conceptual fit when RAG, agents and AI application deployment are central.

Best Dify use cases

  • Internal knowledge assistants: ground answers in company documents and selected sources.
  • Customer-facing AI apps: combine models, retrieval and tools behind a controlled workflow.
  • AI agents: let a model select or use tools for multi-step tasks.
  • RAG prototypes: test retrieval approaches without engineering the entire application layer from scratch.
  • AI workflow APIs: expose repeatable AI logic to another product or internal system.

Who should use Dify?

Dify makes the most sense for developers, technical founders, AI agencies and technically confident solopreneurs who want reusable AI applications without engineering every layer themselves.

It is particularly compelling when you need visual agent workflows, RAG over your own information, multiple model providers, API deployment or a self-hosted route. Non-technical users can learn Dify, but should expect a steeper learning curve than with mainstream AI assistants or simple no-code automation tools.

Is Dify worth it in 2026?

Editorial verdict: yes, for AI-native applications that need more structure than a single prompt or chatbot.

Dify's value is not that it makes AI development completely no-code. Its value is that it packages many difficult pieces of an AI application into a coherent visual platform while retaining meaningful technical control.

For a simple chatbot or occasional AI task, it is more platform than you need. For an agent, RAG assistant or production-oriented AI workflow, Dify deserves serious consideration.
